Position Summary
Adventure Zone Staff play a vital role in delivering Woodruff’s high-adventure experiences for older Scouts and leaders. Each day, this team supports motor boating operations in the morning and leads Scouts through off-site whitewater rafting or horseback riding adventures in the afternoon. Adventure Zone Staff ensure safety, teamwork, and fun in every aspect of the program, representing Scouting America’s spirit of outdoor adventure and skill development. They work closely with outside vendors and outfitters to deliver a Woodruff-level experience — ensuring every participant feels the professionalism, care, and enthusiasm that define Woodruff Scout Camp. Because of the high-adventure nature of this role, all staff must be at least 18 years old, hold current First Aid and CPR certification (training provided at camp), and maintain a mature, safety-first attitude at all times.
Key Responsibilities
- Support Motor Boating operations each morning, assisting the Aquatics and Motor Boat teams with setup, safety checks, fueling, and participant supervision.
- Serve as an assistant guide and logistics coordinator for off-site whitewater rafting or horseback riding trips in the afternoon.
- Work directly with outside vendors and outfitters to deliver a high-quality Woodruff-level experience for all participants.
- Ensure that all Scouts meet preparation, gear, and hydration requirements prior to departure.
- Supervise and engage Scouts during travel and at adventure sites, maintaining excellent behavior and adherence to Scouting America policies.
- Conduct pre-trip safety briefings and assist with transportation logistics under direction of the Adventure Zone Director.
- Maintain and inspect equipment such as life jackets, helmets, and other safety gear daily.
- Assist professional guides or partner outfitters in leading groups on the river or trail while monitoring participant safety and comfort.
- Provide first aid as needed and ensure compliance with emergency procedures.
- Model outdoor ethics, teamwork, and enthusiasm during all activities.
- Help organize and maintain Adventure Zone facilities, storage areas, and vehicles.
- Promote the Woodruff spirit of adventure, growth, and Scouting America values in every interaction.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Minimum age: 18 years old (per Scouting America and adventure program standards).
- First Aid and CPR certification required — training will be provided during staff week.
- Strong swimming ability and comfort on and around boats, rivers, and horses.
- Physically capable of hiking, lifting gear, and working long, active days outdoors.
- Positive attitude, maturity, and strong leadership presence when supervising youth.
- Prior experience in boating, rafting, or equestrian activities preferred but not required.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and handle emergency situations effectively.

- Assist with meal serving in the dining hall as assigned.
- Participate in bathhouse cleaning and general campsite upkeep as part of weekly duties.
- March in and attend flag ceremonies and camp assemblies.
- Take part in campfire programs, helping lead songs, skits, or presentations.
- Uphold the ideals of Scouting America and serve as a positive role model for all campers and leaders.
Work Environment
This position is based in both on-camp and off-site outdoor environments, including the Aquatics area, rivers, trails, and transport vehicles. Staff must be comfortable working in hot, wet, or changing weather, handling physical activity, and managing safety in dynamic conditions. Staff housing and meals are provided on site.
Aquatics Staff

Position Summary
The Aquatics Staff member assists in the delivery of safe, engaging, and educational aquatics programs at Woodruff Scout Camp. This position supports swimming, boating, and other waterfront activities while maintaining strict adherence to Scouting America safety standards. Aquatics staff help Scouts achieve their aquatic merit badges, learn water safety, and enjoy a fun, challenging experience on the lakefront.
Key Responsibilities
- Instruct and assist with swimming, boating, and other aquatics merit badge classes.
- Supervise waterfront areas during scheduled program sessions and open-swim times.
- Enforce Scouting America Safety Afloat and Safe Swim Defense standards at all times.
- Conduct and record swimmer classification tests; monitor and support Scout progress.
- Maintain, clean, and organize aquatics facilities and equipment (boats, paddles, rescue gear, lifejackets).
- Respond promptly and appropriately to aquatic emergencies or first-aid needs.
- Support setup, takedown, and ongoing maintenance of all waterfront activity areas.
- Participate in staff training for aquatic safety, rescue skills, and merit badge instruction.
- Promote enthusiasm, teamwork, and a positive learning atmosphere among Scouts.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Minimum age: 16 (per Scouting America Aquatics standards and camp policy).
- No prior experience is required for this entry-level position; all necessary training will be provided.
- Willingness to obtain American Red Cross Lifeguard certification, provided at no cost to staff who can meet course requirements.

Position Summary
Area Directors serve as departmental leaders at Woodruff Scout Camp, responsible for the operation, administration, and success of a designated program area. They oversee staff ranging from 8 to 40 team members, ensuring that each area delivers safe, engaging, and high-quality programs that align with Scouting America standards and the Woodruff mission. Area Directors manage personnel, coordinate training, handle administrative tasks, and maintain area resources. They set the tone for professionalism and camp spirit, creating an environment where Scouts learn, grow, and thrive.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a program area (such as Aquatics, Outdoor Skills, Nature, Range & Target, STEM, First-Year Camper, or other camp departments).
- Supervise and mentor a staff team ranging from 8 to 40 individuals.
- Create and maintain daily and weekly staff schedules that support all program needs.
- Manage and approve nights off, shift rotations, and duty assignments in coordination with the Program Director.
- Conduct staff training and ongoing coaching, including safety procedures, instructional techniques, and camp policies.
- Maintain program area inventory — track usage, order replacements, and ensure equipment readiness and accountability.
- Enter supply and maintenance needs into the camp’s reporting system promptly.
- Complete and submit weekly staff time sheets accurately and on schedule.

The Business Manager provides administrative and logistical support to ensure the smooth operation of Woodruff Scout Camp. This position is responsible for managing staff payroll and time sheets, coordinating vendor deliveries and supply purchasing, maintaining inventory records, and supporting the Camp Director with essential operational reporting.
The Business Manager plays a key behind-the-scenes role in camp operations, ensuring that every program area has the materials and administrative support needed to operate efficiently and safely. This position may also qualify as a college internship for students studying business, accounting, management, or operations who seek practical experience in nonprofit administration and outdoor program management.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage staff payroll and time sheet collection, ensuring accuracy and on-time submission.
- Use Microsoft Excel to maintain organized and accurate records for payroll, purchasing, and inventory.
- Coordinate supply ordering and delivery with vendors to meet area and program needs.
- Maintain a master inventory log of equipment and supplies across all departments.

Position Summary
The Chief of Customer Care serves as the liaison between Woodruff camp staff and the Scouts and leaders of participating troops, ensuring excellent communication, service, and support throughout each week. This position focuses on creating a positive experience for all camp guests by coordinating feedback, resolving concerns, and facilitating effective interaction between program areas and unit leaders.
Working under the supervision of the Program Chief, the Chief of Customer Care monitors daily operations from a guest-relations perspective and ensures that troops receive accurate information, prompt assistance, and friendly support throughout their stay at camp.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary liaison between camp staff and visiting troops and leaders.
- Maintain regular contact with unit leaders to ensure their needs are met and concerns are resolved promptly.
- Conduct daily leader check-ins, collect feedback, and communicate issues to the Program Chief and appropriate Area Directors.
- Coordinate with program staff to answer questions about merit badges, schedules, and special activities.
- Oversee the check-in and check-out process for troops, ensuring accuracy of paperwork and positive first and last impressions.
- Maintain a daily guest relations log documenting leader meetings, unit feedback, and service follow-ups.
- Manage the communication of schedule changes, weather adjustments, or event updates to troop leaders.
- Organize and lead the Adult Leader Meetings and represent the Program Chief at those sessions when needed.
- Coordinate with Health Lodge staff, Business Manager, and Area Directors to resolve guest issues efficiently and professionally.
- Promote Woodruff’s customer-focused ethos by modeling courtesy, accuracy, and timely service in all interactions.

Position Summary
The Chief of Staff serves as the primary internal operations coordinator for the Woodruff Scout Camp leadership team. This role bridges communication between the Camp Director, Program Chief, Business Manager, and Area Directors, ensuring that daily operations, staff logistics, and leadership initiatives run efficiently and cohesively.
The Chief of Staff is responsible for managing leadership schedules, tracking nights off, maintaining staff accountability, coordinating leadership meetings, and monitoring cross-departmental communication. This position requires a deep understanding of Woodruff’s operations, culture, and traditions — and therefore must be filled by an individual who has served at least three years on Woodruff staff in a leadership role.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the central coordinator for the camp leadership team, ensuring communication between departments is timely and effective.
- Act as a liaison between the Camp Director, Program Chief, Business Manager, and Program Director.
- Manage and maintain leadership schedules, nights off, and rotation assignments for senior and area staff.
- Facilitate daily leadership meetings, track key decisions, and ensure follow-up actions are completed.
- Support onboarding and orientation for new leadership and returning staff during pre-camp training.

The Food Team Member plays a key role in ensuring that campers and staff have a positive and efficient dining experience at Woodruff Scout Camp. This position supports all aspects of food service operations including meal setup, serving, cleanup, sanitation, and teamwork within the dining hall. Food Team Members promote a clean, organized, and cheerful environment that enhances the overall camp experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the preparation, serving, and cleanup of meals for campers and staff.
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation in the kitchen, dining hall, and food storage areas.
- Operate dishwashing equipment and ensure all utensils, trays, and cookware are properly cleaned and stored.
- Support meal service lines by replenishing food items and assisting campers as needed.
- Follow food safety and handling standards as taught during staff training.
- Assist with inventory and organization of food supplies and dining hall equipment.

Health Lodge Staff provide medical, administrative, and emotional support for all campers and staff at Woodruff Scout Camp. The Health Lodge serves as a first aid and assessment center (a “boo-boo station,” not a full clinic), but staff must be able to evaluate potential emergencies, administer basic care, and activate 911 emergency response when necessary.

Motor Boat Staff are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of camp motorized watercraft. They assist the Aquatics team with transportation, boating instruction, rescue readiness, and waterfront operations. This position plays a key role in supporting afternoon aquatics programming — including motorboat operations for aquatics merit badges, safety patrol, staff logistics, and ski-boat activities. Staff members must demonstrate excellent safety awareness, maturity, and respect for all watercraft policies as outlined by Scouting America and the State of Georgia.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain camp motorboats safely and efficiently under the direction of the Aquatics Director.
- Support aquatics classes, waterfront transport, and safety operations as assigned.

Interns are expected to arrive by Saturday, May 23, 2026, for staff training and preparation week. Some departments (including Facilities, Health, and Leadership) may require earlier arrival as assigned. The final day of camp is Saturday, July 19, 2026.
Internship Summary
Woodruff Scout Camp offers internship opportunities across multiple disciplines, giving college students real-world experience while serving youth through Scouting America’s mission of outdoor education and leadership development.
Internships combine classroom learning with practical field experience in program leadership, outdoor education, customer service, health and safety, youth development, and camp operations. Many of these positions are eligible for college credit or practicum hours in partnership with the student’s academic institution.

Internship Disciplines and Example Roles
Business / Nonprofit Administration
Gain experience in operations, logistics, purchasing, retail management, and personnel support

Work directly with youth through lesson delivery, merit badge instruction, and activity leadershi

Participate in environmental education, sustainability, and land management initiatives.

Gain exposure to first aid operations, triage assessment, recordkeeping, and medical support in a camp environment.

Work alongside the camp health team supporting youth wellness, stress management, and positive staff culture.

General Responsibilities
Although duties vary by placement, all interns are expected to:
- Support Scouting America’s mission by providing a safe, inclusive, and educational camp experience.
- Participate actively in pre-camp training and orientation.
- Demonstrate reliability, teamwork, and professionalism in all responsibilities.
- Maintain program materials, equipment, and facilities in good condition.
- Communicate effectively with Scouts, leaders, and fellow staff.
- Adhere to Scouting America’s policies on Youth Protection, Risk Management, and NCAP compliance.
- Exhibit leadership, enthusiasm, and respect for all participants and colleagues.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Minimum age: 18 years old for general internship roles ( 21+ for specific departments).
- Enrolled in a college or university program in a related major.
- Positive attitude, adaptability, and strong work ethic.
- Must hold or obtain First Aid and CPR certification (training provided at camp).
- Must comply with Scouting America’s Youth Protection and Risk Management standards.
- Approval from your academic institution may be required to receive course credit.
Compensation & Benefits
- Pay Range: $300–$500 per week, depending on position and certifications.
- Most uniform pieces, housing, and food are provided during the internship period.
- Opportunities for college credit, practicum hours, or service-learning fulfillment.

Work Environment
Internships take place at Woodruff Scout Camp in Blairsville, Georgia, part of the Atlanta Area Council of Scouting America. Students live and work in a collaborative outdoor setting that combines instruction, leadership, and field-based learning. Most positions include a mix of indoor administrative work and outdoor experiential education. All meals and housing are provided on site.

Working on camp staff offers you the opportunity to learn new skills outside of a classroom. Improve your public speaking, teach classes, manage projects or become certified in a skill such as lifeguarding or shooting sports.

Camp Staff members must be age 16 or older, but those that are 15 can serve as a Counselor-In-Training (CIT) for a two-week experience. CIT Information.
